I came across this video a couple days ago and wanted to share it! In this video, Ellen DeGeneres mocks a new line of pens called “Bic Pens for Women”. Her stand-up humor not only is absolutely hilarious, but is so truthful when considering gender politics. From commenting on wage differences between men and women, to the importance of women’s opinions, to the importance of women remaining domestic and fitting into the heteronormative feminine framework, she nicely highlights the inequalities that continue to persist. She says:
“It’s designed to fit a woman’s hand…what does that mean, like so when we’re taking down dictation from our bosses we’ll feel comfortable, and forget we’re not getting paid as much?”
“When you have an opinion, write it down on a piece of paper, and then crumple it up and throw it away, because no one cares what we think, sweetie.”
Do you think she goes too far in pointing out the disparity between men and women, or do you think her humor provides an accurate portrayal of women? In addition, do you think this product will really be successful in a society that women like to think is progressive?
